You don’t have to live with a lump in your neck

Thyroid nodules are non-cancerous growths that can gradually increase in size. While some cause no symptoms at first, larger nodules may lead to:

  • A visible lump in the neck
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Pressure or tightness when breathing
  • Voice changes
  • Overactive thyroid symptoms (hyperthyroidism)

If you’ve been told to “just monitor it” but your symptoms are worsening, you may have a safe, nonsurgical option.

Minimally invasive thyroid nodule treatment

At North Star Vascular & Interventional, we offer image-guided procedures that treat thyroid nodules without removing the thyroid gland.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

RFA is a precise, minimally invasive procedure used to shrink most benign thyroid nodules.

Using ultrasound guidance, a small probe is placed directly into the nodule. Controlled heat is delivered to destroy the targeted tissue while preserving surrounding healthy thyroid tissue.

Benefits of RFA:

  • No incision
  • No visible scar
  • Performed under local anesthesia
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Preserves normal thyroid function
  • Most patients return to normal activity within a day or two.

Thyroid Artery Embolization (For Larger Nodules or Goiters)

For patients with larger nodules or goiters, thyroid artery embolization may be recommended.

Using image guidance, a small catheter is inserted into the artery supplying the thyroid. Tiny particles are delivered to reduce blood flow to the targeted area, causing the nodule to gradually shrink over time.

Like RFA, this approach reduces symptoms, avoids open surgery, and allows patients to return to normal activity within a ay or two.
