Liver Cancer Treatment at North Star Vascular and Interventional
At North Star Vascular and Interventional, we specialize in minimally invasive, cutting-edge treatments for primary and metastatic liver cancers. Our interventional radiologists offer advanced, image-guided therapies that effectively target tumors while preserving healthy liver function.

Comprehensive for Liver Cancer Treatment Options
We provide personalized treatment plans for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), and ocular melanoma that has spread to the liver. Our minimally invasive therapies include:
Transarterial Radioembolization (TARE/Y-90)
Also known as radioembolization or Y-90 radioembolization, TARE (Transarterial Radioembolization) is performed by an interventional radiologist using imaging to guide a small catheter into the bloodstream and through the hepatic artery to the smaller arteries feeding the tumor. Once there, the doctor delivers microscopic yttrium-90 (Y-90) radioactive beads directly into the liver tumor.
This high-dose radiation therapy targets cancer cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. TARE is a key treatment option for HCC, metastatic colorectal cancer, and neuroendocrine tumors. While not a cure, TARE can halt the progression of liver cancer, significantly improve a patient’s quality of life and improve survival.
Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE)
TACE (Transarterial Chemoembolization) is a targeted therapy that delivers chemotherapy directly into the tumor’s blood supply while blocking (embolizing) the artery to starve the tumor of oxygen and nutrients.
Performed by an interventional radiologist, this treatment allows for a higher concentration of chemotherapy to reach the tumor with fewer side effects on the rest of the body as with systemic chemotherapy.. TACE is commonly used for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and metastatic liver tumors.
Image-Guided Tumor Ablation
For patients with small or localized liver tumors, tumor ablation techniques provide an effective treatment alternative to surgery by directly destroying tumor cells:
- Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) – Uses heat energy to destroy cancerous cells.
- Microwave Ablation (MWA) – Generates higher temperatures than RFA, making it effective for larger tumors.
- Cryoablation – Freezes tumors at sub-zero temperatures, leading to cell destruction.
Ablation is often recommended for early-stage HCC, metastatic colorectal cancer, and neuroendocrine tumors when surgery is not an option. Procedures are performed by one of our interventional radiologists who uses imaging to precisely guide the ablation procedure within the liver.
