Tired of Leg Pain, Swelling, or Bulging Veins?

Rediscover comfort and confidence with advanced, minimally invasive treatments for varicose and spider veins — all performed in our modern outpatient center by board-certified vascular specialists.

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that rise above the surface of the skin. Spider veins are smaller red, purple, or blue vessels that appear just beneath the skin and usually don’t bulge.

Both develop from a condition called venous insufficiency — when the tiny one-way valves inside your veins weaken and allow blood to pool instead of flowing properly back to your heart.

The underlying causes include heredity, age, prolonged standing, exposure to the sun, hormone changes or weight gain. In addition to the unsightly appearance of varicose veins, the condition can be quite painful. Delaying treatment can lead to more serious complications, including inflammation, blood clots, skin ulcers, bleeding and deep vein thrombosis.

Why Do Varicose Veins Occur?

Varicose and spider veins can affect anyone, but certain factors increase the risk:

  • Family history of vein disease
  • Prolonged standing or sitting
  • Pregnancy or hormonal changes
  • Aging
  • Weight gain or obesity
  • Sun exposure (especially for spider veins)

If untreated, varicose veins may worsen and lead to pain, inflammation, skin changes, ulcers, or blood clots.

When to Seek Treatment

You don’t need to live with leg discomfort or hide your legs. Common symptoms that deserve evaluation include:

  • Aching, throbbing, or heaviness in the legs
  • Swelling or tenderness
  • Itching or burning along a vein
  • Rope-like or bulging veins
  • Skin discoloration or thickening
  • Night cramps or restless legs

What are my varicose vein treatment options?

Conservative treatment for these veins are focused on pain relief and include the use of compression stockings, leg elevation and anti-inflammatory medications.

There was a time when large varicose veins could only be removed with a surgical procedure called “vein stripping.” However, this is no longer the case. Minimally invasive, outpatient treatments are now the front-line therapy for these veins.

At North Star Vascular & Interventional, we offer several different treatment options for varicose veins, depending on the type and their severity.
