Genicular Artery Embolization: Minimally Invasive Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment in Minneapolis
Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive, FDA-approved treatment for knee osteoarthritis (OA). It requires no surgery, no hospitalization and no lengthy recovery. It is highly effective at relieving pain, and if you seek GAE treatment for OA early enough, you may not ever need surgery for your condition.
GAE works by targeting the abnormal blood vessels within the synovium (Joint lining) that are responsible for inflammation and cartilage loss. By embolizing or “blocking” these abnormal vessels, blood flow is reduced to normal levels. Pain is significantly reduced, and cartilage loss is halted or significantly slowed.

During the procedure, one of our interventional radiologists uses imaging to guide a catheter through the vascular system and to the genicular artery feeding the joint lining. Tiny particles are injected that block the flow of blood through the abnormal blood vessels within the joint lining, which in turn decreases the inflammatory mediators that the joint lining secretes. The result is fast and long-term pain relief, as well as improved function and quality of life. Additionally, it does not preclude the ability to have knee replacement surgery in the future.
A clinical study performed in 2021 demonstrated that the average pain scores decreased from 8 out of 10 to 3 out of 10 within the first week of the procedure.1
