HAE Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

If conservative treatments have failed and the symptoms of chronic hemorrhoids do not go away, a new and minimally invasive procedure called hemorrhoidal artery embolization is available from our doctors. This procedure is typically recommended for patients with grade 1 to 3 internal hemorrhoids who have not responded to conservative treatment. It is safe, effective and offers comparable outcomes to surgery, but with less pain.

The hemorrhoidal artery embolization (HAE) procedure

HAE is performed by an interventional radiologist who inserts a tiny catheter into an artery in your upper thigh and then uses x-ray imaging to guide it through the body’s blood vessels to the rectal artery. Special coils are inserted into the artery to cut off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid, causing it to shrink. The success rate of this procedure is greater than 90%.1

Unlike surgery, there is no general anesthesia required for the procedure, no incisions and no scarring. You are able to return home the same day and resume your normal activities.

Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization (HAE) FAQ

Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization (HAE) is a cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedure that treats hemorrhoids by blocking blood flow to the hemorrhoidal arteries. This effectively reduces the size and symptoms of hemorrhoids, providing much-needed relief.

HAE is a straightforward procedure. Our skilled interventional radiologists use imaging to guide a tiny catheter into the arteries feeding your hemorrhoids. We then inject small particles to block these arteries, shrinking the hemorrhoids.

Here’s what to expect:

  1. Sedation to keep you comfortable.
  2. A small catheter is guided to the hemorrhoidal arteries using advanced imaging.
  3. Tiny particles are used to block these arteries.
  4. The procedure takes about 1-2 hours, and you can go home the same day.

If traditional treatments like diet changes and medications haven’t worked for you, HAE could be your answer. It’s ideal for those seeking a less invasive, highly effective solution. Our experts at North Star Vascular and Interventional can determine if HAE is right for you.

HAE offers significant benefits: it’s minimally invasive, less painful, and has a quick recovery time. Plus, nothing is inserted into your rectum, there’s no need for general anesthesia, and the risk of complications is lower. At our clinic, we focus on your comfort and swift recovery.

You’ll receive a local anesthetic and a sedative for relaxation. Our interventional radiologist will insert a tiny catheter in the groin to access the blood vessels that feed the hemorrhoids. The entire process typically takes 1 hour, ensuring you’re well cared for throughout.

Recovery is usually quick. Most patients return to normal activities in a few days. Some mild discomfort may occur, but it’s manageable with over-the-counter pain meds. Our team is here to support you through every step of your recovery.

While any procedure carries some risk, serious complications from HAE are rare. Potential issues include minor bleeding or infection, but our experienced team takes all necessary precautions to ensure your safety.

HAE is highly effective in reducing hemorrhoid symptoms. Many of our patients experience significant relief and a better quality of life post-procedure. We’re dedicated to delivering successful outcomes for you.

Yes, follow-up appointments are essential to monitor your recovery and the success of the procedure. We’ll schedule these visits to check for any complications and ensure everything is on track. Our care for you doesn’t end after the procedure.

While HAE is effective, there’s a chance hemorrhoids could return. Maintaining a healthy diet, good bowel habits, and regular check-ups with our experts can help minimize this risk. We’re committed to supporting your long-term health.

Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the rectum or near the anal opening that develop due to factors like aging, chronic constipation, or straining during bowel movements. They can cause discomfort, itching, and even bleeding. There are two types: internal hemorrhoids, which occur inside the rectum, and external hemorrhoids, which form near the anal opening. While common, they can greatly affect your quality of life if left untreated.

Hemorrhoids aren’t typically dangerous, but they can cause significant discomfort. If you’re dealing with ongoing pain, itching, or bleeding, it’s time to seek treatment. Don’t let hemorrhoids interfere with your life when effective treatments like HAE are available at our clinic.

There are two main types of hemorrhoids: Internal Hemorrhoids: These form inside the rectum and may not be visible but can cause bleeding and discomfort. External Hemorrhoids: These form near the anal opening and can be seen or felt, especially when swollen or painful.

Internal hemorrhoids develop when the blood vessels in the rectal area become weakened and dilated, often due to straining during bowel movements, constipation, or genetic predisposition. These vessels form swollen pockets (hemorrhoids) that can lead to symptoms like bleeding and discomfort. HAE targets these blood vessels to help resolve the problem at its source.
